The City of Oak Creek, Wisconsin is located along the western shore of Lake Michigan in the southeast corner of Milwaukee County and adjacent to the City of Milwaukee. The population was 28,456 at the 2000 census.
Oak Creek, then still semi-rural, was incorporated in 1955 under the terms of Wisconsin statute 66.0215, also known as "The Oak Creek Law," crafted by Town Attorney Tony Basile to prevent its annexation by neighboring Milwaukee.
Oak Creek is located along the western shore of Lake Michigan in the southeast corner of Milwaukee County and adjacent to the City of Milwaukee, Oak Creek, with 28.4 square miles of area, enjoys an enviable location in the Midwest. Not only is Oak Creek a part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan area, it sits alongside the Great Lake Michigan with its charming and inspiring views, and is only 85 miles from the heart of Chicago and 330 miles from Minneapolis both via Interstate 94. Thus, Oak Creek residents enjoy the suburban and rural atmosphere while, at the same time, taking advantage of the urban services provided by metro Milwaukee, including an abundance of professional sports and cultural activities.
Today, the City of Oak Creek has 22 named neighborhoods and 24 playgrounds and parks. The residential neighborhoods are serviced by the six elementary (K-5) schools; two middle schools and the Oak Creek High School of the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District. These facilities also serve the neighborhoods for other cultural, recreational and social activities, as does the Oak Creek Community Center. The neighborhoods exhibit the city's goal of housing diversity through single family homes, apartments, duplexes, mobile homes and condominiums. The vast majority of the city's housing has been constructed since Oak Creek's 1955 incorporation.
Oak Creek continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in Milwaukee County. From 2000 to 2010 the population grew from 28,456 to 34,451 people, an increase of over 20 percent. In addition to population growth, over the last 10 years the City has seen significant retail and industrial growth. The City also has aggressively been working on plans for redeveloping former industrial properties within the City including the former Delphi Automotive plant and the Lakefront. Mining equipment manufacturer Bucyrus International announced June 22, 2010 that it would move headquarters personnel from South Milwaukee to Midwest Airlines' former headquarters space in Oak Creek. Senior management and other personnel would be moving to the new location making room for additional employees at its South Milwaukee facility. In addition, Caterpillar Inc. intends to locate the Caterpillar Mining world headquarters there after its acquisition of Bucyrus International. The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & Technicians is also based in Oak Creek. The city also hosts a number of small companies, with interests ranging from engineering to agriculture, including the locally-famous Black Bear Bottling plant.
