The Village of Hales Corners is located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. It occupies an area of 3.2 square miles and in 2007 had a population of 7,640. The City of Greenfield is located to the north of the Village, the Village of Greendale is to the east, the City of Franklin is to the south, and the City of New Berlin is to the west.

European settlers first arrived in the Hales Corners area of Southeastern Wisconsin in the late 1830’s. At that time, the Potawotomi and Menominee Indian population was compelled by treaty to move to the west, and the land was sold to potential settlers by the United States Government for as little as $1.25 per acre. Two brothers, Seneca and William Hale, claimed 160 acres each in 1837. Their father, Ebenezer, joined them and purchased another 160 acres to the east. Their family’s property formed three of the four corners at the current intersection of Janesville Road and 108th Street (Hwy. 100). Due to the agricultural traffic along Janesville Road, the area attracted commercial development. It was first referred to as “Hale’s Corners” after William Hale, who became the first postmaster. Later, the apostrophe was dropped, and the name Hales Corners stuck.

Hales Corners continued to develop as a commercial and residential center. It was established as an unincorporated village in 1924 and was incorporated as a village on January 30, 1952. The Village’s current population is 7,665. Hales Corners' median income for a household in the village was $54,536, and the median income for a family was $66,136.

Today, Hales Corners offers valuable resources for residents. A large central shopping area, excellent schools, and beautiful Whitnall Park, home to the international award-winning Boerner Botanical Garden, and Wehr Nature Center are all shared with bordering communities. These facts, plus ready access to the employment, academic, entertainment and shopping venues of nearby Milwaukee and Milwaukee County's vast freeway system and international airport, promote the reputation of the Village of Hales Corners as being “a great place to live.”

There are numerous organizations and activities that contribute to the civic vitality and enjoyment of this area. While Village government sponsors numerous functions and programs, there is an abundance of civic groups, schools, churches of various denominations, and neighborhood groups that would welcome your participation.
