About Franklin, Wisconsin Real Estate
"A City of the Future"

Welcome to Franklin, Wisconsin!

The City of Franklin, Wisconsin is a growing suburban community of 33,000 in the Chicago-Milwaukee I-94 corridor.

On December 20, 1839, the south portion of the Town of Kinnikennick was split off to form the town of Franklin. As of the 1840 census, the population of the Town of Franklin was 248. The name “Franklin” was given in homage to one of the Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was organized into a township in 1841. The township consisted of a thirty-six-mile area that was originally covered with heavy timber, which was mostly hardwoods such as hickory, walnut, and butternut. Most of the town's drainage was delivered by the Root River and there was an abundance of wildlife including bears, deer, and wolves.

By the 1950s, Franklin was known as a “City of homes” for its growing residential areas, which served as a suburb of the city of Milwaukee. In 1956, town officials were alarmed by the possibility that the City of Milwaukee might attempt to annex portions of Franklin. In response, the town was officially incorporated as a fourth-class city on August 15, 1956. Franklin is bounded by the City of Oak Creek to the east, the villages of Greendale and Hales Corners to the north, Racine County to the south, and Waukesha County to the west. The city of Milwaukee lies adjacent to the Franklin city limits in the northeast.

Today, Franklin is the largest city in Wisconsin to attain more than 10% population growth since the 2000 census. The popularity of the community is also evidenced by continuing consumer demand for new homes in the area. The city offers many key advantages for businesses seeking a strong foundation for success and profitability. Situated in southwestern Milwaukee County within a metropolitan population of 1.5 million, Franklin provides a strategic business location within easy driving distance of Milwaukee to the north, a major airport to the east, Chicago to the south, and Madison to the west.

Money Magazine, a national financial magazine, ranked Franklin, Wisconsin, among the top 100 cities to live. According to the magazine, "We looked at small towns, populations under 50,000 trying to find hidden gems people might now know about, and we wanted things important to the typical American family: not too expensive, good schools, low crime, good health care, and fiscal stability."

And in its April/May 2007 issue, Franklin was designated by the Financial Times FDi magazine, a foreign investment publication out of London, as a North American "City of the Future." Franklin participates in the Metropolitan Milwaukee Technology Zone, with high-speed fiber optic infrastructure, wireless internet service, and reliable and affordable electricity.

World-class facilities under construction in 2007 include the Phase II office complex on the Northwestern Mutual campus to accommodate an additional 1,100 employees, and the new six-story, state-of-the-art Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare medical center.

Convenient freeway access is provided by four interchanges for Interstate I-94, at the southeastern area of the City and running parallel to the City's eastern border. Transportation and logistics are facilitated by U.S. Highway 45; Wisconsin State Highways 36, 100, and 241 (South 27th Street); and Milwaukee County Highways A, BB, H, J, OO, U, and ZZ. Franklin is also served by eight freeway interchanges for I-43 and six interchanges for I-894, both running parallel to the City's northern border, two miles directly to the north.
